Ash (Fraxinus Excelsior)

The Ash can reach 25m or more in height. It has a grey bark that is smooth at first but soon acquires shallow vertical fissures.

The upper branches form a rounded crown, but the lower tend to curve downwards, only curving upwards at the tips

The timber is tough, resilient to bend and was valued for making spears, ploughs, harrows and oars in the past. It is still used in today's furniture.
